A total of 10 incidents, resulting in spills exceeding 1m3 net, occurred in Europe during 2003. Of these, 9 incidents were attributed to Third Party damage. 4 of these incidents were caused by attempted theft from the pipeline, 3 were due to accidental damage with immediate consequences and the remaining 2 were from previously sustained damage. In 2 of the cases of accidental damage, the machine drivers knew of the existence of the pipelines before they were struck. This highlights the importance of informing the pipeline operator of all excavation works, prior to commencement, in order that they may ensure that operations are carried out safely.
