Concawe have released their report on European cross-country oil pipeline performance for 2002. There was a total of 14 reportable incidents in 2002 which resulted in a final loss of 318m3 of product. The causes of the incidents are attributed to:
Mechanical Failure 1 incidents Operational 0 incidents Corrosion 6 incidents Natural Hazard 1 incidents Third Party Activity 6 incidents
Thankfully, there were no associated fires or injuries.
Of the 6 reported Third Party incidents, 1 was due to malicious damage - i.e. an attempt to steal product! In 2 of the remaining five incidents the pipeline had been identified beforehand but the safety implications were ignored. One incident was due to previous damage although the pipeline had 4m of cover! It is suspected that this occurred when a new water pipe was laid directly above the oil pipeline.
