Over 50% of all oil spilt from European oil pipelines is due to 3rd Party damage and any loss automatically results in a pollution incident.

1998 Incidents Statistics

Causes of Incidents No of Incidents % of Total Incidents
Mechanical Failure 1 11%
Operational 2 22%
Corrosion 1 11%
Natural Hazard 0 0%
Third Party Damage 5 56%

Volume of OIL spilt due to Third Party: Damage = 561.2m3 or 561200 litre

Between them, the seven participants, Esso Petroleum Co. Ltd, Mainline Pipelines Ltd, BPA, TotalFinaElf, Government Pipelines and Storage System, Conoco and Manchester Jetline Ltd account for approximately 4440Km of buried oil pipelines in England, Scotland and Wales.

CONCAWE (Conservation Of Clean Air, Water and the Environment) covers 30600 km of oil pipelines in western Europe

The majority of the pipelines are multi-product pipelines, this means they carry different grades of refined petroleum products, gasoline, jet and diesel fuels.

They all operate at high pressure, typically in-excess of 66 bar (1000 psi) and some up to 100 bar (1500 psi).

The pipelines range in diameter from 100mm (4") to 406mm (16") and usually have a black coating.

These pipelines are predominantly cross-country but may be encountered during street works where they either cross or occasionally run down the road, this can happen in both rural and urban areas.
